Silvy snuggled into her mother’s lap, hiding from the cold wind that slipped around them through cracks in the walls. The long-house was big and sparse, but the swollen bellies of three women promised more bodies to help keep them warm. Daddy Fin was listening to the tales of Mother Liv, Silvy’s mama. Every night she told stories of magic, wizards, dragons, Moon Makers, Thieves, and Rippers. For as long as she could remember, and at four years old that was a long time, Mother Liv’s stories were the best part of the day.
A scream split the air.

The phone sat in her hand, unmoving. Silent. Tess stared at it as she paced around the garden. He was supposed to call. The voices and the screaming around her continued, but she ignored them. She needed to talk to Him. She knew He was going to have a cow. But as long as...
The buzz and shrill tones of her phone interrupted her thoughts.
She snatched it up to her ear quickly, "Hello?" She asked, her voice just louder than a whisper.
"I hope you have good news," a bored voice said on the other end.
She shivered. It wasn't Him, probably worse. It was Em.

Chief stood in a long line of Servants. The leather mask that pressed against his face reeked of death and chemicals. It was only cut by the soft cloth pressed against the inside of the mask. The scent of his target listed into his nose from the cloth, but he still couldn’t detect a fresher scent. The air was muddled with the perfumes, sweat and other odors that filled the garden. He blew against the cloth and it fell from his nose to rest between his lips. The mask was stuffy, only the eye holes let in any air to breath. Had he been a pup he would have refused the job, or failed before now. But he was Chief for a reason. And he was the

Jenny’s hand was as deft as any servant’s, quick with applying make-up and everything else they need. They had chosen a cafe not far from their neighborhood and got dressed in their gowns as soon as their makeup was on. They sipped on coffee too sweet for their own good as they worked.
“Really? Gray?” Silvia groaned.
Jenny rolled her eyes, “It looks good on you.”
“She wouldn’t let me get you the one with all the bedazzled gems. It looked like a grade school art experiment.” Sparx said with a shriek of laughter. Her dress followed the rule of thumb for all of her outfits; fire themed. Th

“I trust you got the job?” A gruff voice asked from the other side of a cell-phone conversation.
“He didn’t expect a thing.” In fact, Eric seemed happy, ecstatic even, that she offered to take over Servant duty for him. He was busy with the ball after all.
“Good, and you remember what’s at stake if you don’t succeed?”
Tess forced her voice to answer dryly, “Yes,” all too well. The connection was cut and Tess put the phone in her breast pocket. She quickly ran her fingers along the back of her head, checking that the stitches were in perfect order. Everything was in place. Sh

Silvia rolled over and slapped her clock. She groaned and checked the time and groaned once more. It was an hour past her usual wake up time. She was going to get an earful from Jenny and she knew it. But that didn’t matter, and she got to see Illumor and feel it’s warmth. It was worth any consequences.
A sigh slipped from her at the thought of Illumor. It was like a drug. The warmth always made her feel more alive.
A light shone in the corner of Silvia’s eye and she jerked around to see it. The light lasted less than a second and all she could find was an old wooden rectangle she used as a doorstop. She

Chapter 4: A Middle-Aged old man
Near the edge of a stone cistern sate a middle-aged man working a knife against a wooden staff. He pulled spiraling shavings off the wood with each pass. He worked with only the light of a small, electric lamp, but his eyes weren't on the knife or the length of wood. They were on the upper ledges of the cistern. He smiled when he heard the sound of footprints. He had been just a little early, sometimes, though not often, he had lead himself astray by days. Thankfully this time it was only by a few minutes.
"Have you been keeping an eye on Revlis?" He asked, still carving. Wood shavings fell to the ground as shapes slowly came into being.

"Miss," a heavy hand fell on Silvia's shoulder. "We need to talk."
Silvia turned to see a Servant in a bright orange mask. The Servant was massive, the tallest she had ever seen and his suit did little to hide the muscles underneath.
Orange Mask?
Special Control. Don't you know anything?
I knew that. Silvia snapped. She took a breath and addressed the Servant, "Lead the way." She tried to hide how her knees shook. She had been in trouble, sure. But being infected could mean disappearing or being relocated. Where she would go, she didn't know. But she knew she didn't want to leave. This was where she knew all the streets and shops. This wa

Silvia preferred maintaining a shortest first rule when crowds were involved. She squeezed through the crowd, gently shoving past the other Masters so she could see the action. Usually, a crowd of this size meant that a fight had broken out and Silvia enjoyed a bit of harmless violence. But this time, there wasn’t a brawl, instead, when she reached what was causing the commotion she saw a car with the Royal insignia emblazoned on the side. She clapped her hands to her face to hide her excitement. This was much better than a bit of hair pulling and name calling.
The Royal Family was making an announcement.

Hello you lovely people!
A new year has come and resolutions have been said. As with every year my resolution is to continue growing as an author. And with growth comes the realization that you must let things go. Sadly, I fear this website is going to be one of the things I need to let go of to grow. As a writer there are very few and limited avenues for advertising and growing an audience on DeviantArt. Especially since the majority of authors and readers have already moved onto different avenues. Thank you so much for sharing this adventure with me and I hope all of your lives are fruitful and amazing.
If you are still interested in read
You may be curious as to where my entire gallery went. Don't worry, it still exists. They weren't deleted, destroyed, eaten or stolen by goblins. I just popped them all into storage. I'm in the middle of getting a bunch of things set up for the episodic release of 'Start the Fire'. Presently I have released the first chapter for exclusive early access to my Patrons at Patreon.com/Phunockery and next week will release it to the public to consume (while giving my Patrons access to Ch. 2!)
Now, to me! Last you heard from me I was married with two kids in the great city of Kalamazoo. Well two out of three are still true. I am now happily separat
Just not here.
I haven't posted on DeviantArt regularly in AGES. But I am creating. I'm posting. I'm even doing new, wild and (honestly) scary things. Just not here.
If you're still interested in my writing you can find samples of it at http://Patreon.com/Phunokcery without subscribing. If you do sub you'll be able to get access to some pretty crazy rough drafts.
On that note, I also live stream at http://twitch.tv/Phunockery . Every Monday and Tuesday I either write a Roll-A-Story where the chat and I write a story based on the dice rolls of the in chat bot, or I do chat suggested sprints. Both are a ton of fun.
